Houston, Texas - The Houston 80-20 Asian American Political Action Committee (H80-20 PAC) and Communities United for Hubert Vo will lead a caravan of buses filled with community supporters of newly elected State Representative District 149 Hubert Vo to Austin on Tuesday, January 11, Inauguration Day. The buses will leave Houston at 6 a.m. Tuesday morning from Universal Shopping Center, 11360 Bellaire Blvd. between Boone Rd. and Kirkwood. Vo beat 22-year incumbent Talmadge Heflin by a margin of thirty-three votes after two recounts were performed. However, Heflin is contesting the victory alleging some one hundred plus illegal ballots. A State House committee, made up of five Republicans and four Democrats, has been appointed by Speaker Craddick to oversee this contest. Both Vo and Heflin will present their evidence to the Committee on January 27.A rally is planned for 2 p.m. on the south steps of the Capitol. Among those scheduled to speak are Houston City Council Member Gordon Quan, Austin City Council Candidate Jennifer Kim and several other community leaders. The rally will culminate with a speech from newly inaugurated State Representative Hubert Vo, the first Vietnamese-American elected to state office in Texas. Several groups and organizations will also be at the rally including Little Saigon Radio, AFL-CIO and Texas Democratic Women.
Members of H80-20 PAC and Communities United For Hubert Vo have been collecting thousands of signatures both on-line and at shopping malls in and around the District. They plan to deliver them to the House Committee to demonstrate the support of the community for Mr. Vo. ˇ°The petition signers are calling on members of the House to reject this attempt to overturn the will of the people of the district,ˇ± explained H80-20 president, Rogene Gee Calvert. ˇ°We have faith that our wonderful democratic system will work and Mr. Vo will serve long and well as the representative of District 149.ˇ±
H80-20 PAC also plans to deliver letters to all members of the House in the morning urging them to ˇ°do the right thing and keep Hubert Vo.ˇ± The buses will return to Houston by 8 p.m. that evening.
