WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 19, 2008 The BA Degree in Chinese Studies at UH! X. Sharon Wen xwen@uh.edu Dear Friends, The B.A. degree in Chinese Studies has been established at the College of Liberal Arts and Social Studies (CLASS), UH. Please help distribute and forward this message to anyone who may be interested. Thank you! Xiaohong (Sharon) Wen, Ph.D. The BA in Chinese Studies has embarked at University of Houston! The Chinese Studies Program of the Department of Modern and Classical Languages at the College of Liberal Arts and Social Studies at UH is pleased to announce a Bachelor of Arts in Chinese Studies. Students may now declare Chinese Studies as a major! For further information, please see the webpage: www.class.uh.edu/MCl/Chns/about.asp , or contact Erika Jimenes, the MCL Academic Advisor: esalinas@Central.UH.edu. Another popular program of the Chinese Studies is the Summer Study Abroad. Students may take up to three courses (nine credit hours) toward the Chinese Major / Minor in five weeks while in Beijing and Shanghai. The program is academically vigorous and culturally enriching. It offers intensive course work in a culturally rich language immersion environment, and travel at the beginning of the program and on weekends. The Chinese Studies provides a high quality academic program as evidenced by the achievements of its students, who have won numerous prestigious prizes both nationally and internationally. Brian Pawlic, one of our students, has won First Place in the International Chinese Speech Tournament (Hanyu QiaoººÓïÇÅ) in Beijing, 2005. The Chinese Studies Program also organizes various events: regular lecture series, teacher training and workshops for K-12 teachers, Chinese Language Speech Contests, Chinese film and culture festivals. This year, the Chinese Studies Program has received funding as a major collaborator to increase the number and expertise of students and teachers of Chinese language, the STARTALK grant ($200,000) jointly funded by the National Intelligence and the Department of Defense as the National Security Language Initiative. The Chinese enrollment at UH has been the largest among all higher education institutions in TX according to the most recent survey from authoritative MLJ report. In addition to the current students, the program has about 50 alumni who are studying and working in China and other Asian countries at present. The UH Chinese enrollment is 25% of the total in the state of Texas, higher than UT-Austin. Another indicator is that the Chinese enrollment is the top 3rd at the UH campus yet the top 6th at the national level. That reflects the role UH will play in the future of the US-China economic, political, and cultural relations.
